Temišvar - Temeswar, Timosoara, Timisoara
Town in western Romania, center of culture and economy in the
Timisoara Banat. Contrary to its name (Timisoara literally means the
town on Tamiš) it is located on Begej and the Begej canal. Since the
mid XVI century it was Turkish possession, and for a certain period
it was the seat of the Timisoara eyalet. After the treaty of
Karlovci (
1699
) it remained in Turkish possessions, and the army of
Eugene of
Savoy
captured it in the beginning of Austrian-Turkish war
in 1716-18. During XVIII century it was an important cultural and
political center of Serbian people, and several Serbian ecclesiastic
and public conventions were taking place in it.
