Conquest of Belgrade 1789
Last Austrian-Turkish war 1787-1791, started with great
expectations. Emperor Joseph II and Russian Empress Catherine II
have formally agreed to divide Turkish possessions in Europe. The
war was inadequately led (in our territories) in spite of the pomp
and participation of Joseph II himself. The main Austrian
headquarters was in
Zemun
(in the house of Karamata). Our people
called this war "Kočina krajina" - after the commander of Serbian
volunteer units. Only after 1789, when general
Laudon
(later
Fieldmarshall) became the chief commander, the Austrian army has
overtaken the initiative and Belgrade was seized in October 1789.
Laudon
has made use of Eugene of
Savoy
's ditches (remaining there
for several decades) for encampment of his troops, they were
described in Belgrade as
Laudon
's ditches, while the central part of
town was called "a town enclosed by ditch".
