THE APPLICATION OF DATA ENVELOPMENT ANALYSIS (DEA) IN ECONOMIC RESEARCH
DEA is the leading, specially designed technique for measuring the relative efficiency of complex entities. It enables efficiency analysis of the observed decision-making units on the basis of multiple inputs and outputs. This makes it a very powerful tool for benchmarking purposes and improvements in performance management.
Therefore, DEA is used in wide areas of economic research, including construction of various indexes, investigation of the role of knowledge management in the performance of inter-sectoral R&D projects, measurement of educational performance, measurement of productivity growth of IT industries, etc. The purpose of the lecture is to give some indication about what DEA is, what it does, how evaluates efficiency, how identifies paths to improve efficiency, its advantages and limitations, and possible applications. This approach will enable academics and practitioners to explore and access the value of using DEA in their research and performance management.
