FAILURE ANALYSIS OF MECHANICAL CONNECTIONS FOR RAILWAY VEHICLES
In order to improve the safety and efficiency of railway traffic in operation, it is necessary to reduce the frequency of train breaking in railway traffic, which occurs when the mechanical connection (draw gear or screw coupling between railway vehicles) is broken. Some mechanical connection elements are safety elements designed to break in the case of an overload. However, in exploitation, failure of these elements occurs in only about 6% cases, because other elements of traction devices fail. In the presented research the condition of the elements determined by testing was verified by applying the Finite Element Method (FEM) and modeling the screw coupling selected elements, with the expected loads in operation. The significance of this research is reflected in the verification of the numerical model by tests, which enables the assessment of the occurrence of failure for operating conditions and the condition of traction devices. The results induce an improvement in the diagnostics and repair of draw gear or screw coupling, in order to improve the maintenance and reduce the failure.

HOW TO CONDUCT A BIG DATA ANALYSIS ON AIR POLLUTION AND HEALTH?
The talk will present the logistics of planning, designing, and executing a big data analysis on air pollution and health. First, we'll introduce basic terms and concepts in epidemiology and requirements for performing healthcare data analysis. Then, we will talk about the datasets required to undertake the study, in particular, exposure data describing air pollution; and confounders data such as population, geospatial data, weather and climate data, and others. The talk will focus on spatial and temporal data aggregation for statistical analysis on air pollution and health and automating these processes in computational workflows on the high-performance computing infrastructure. We'll also talk about result dissemination, which is especially challenging when working with sensitive healthcare data.
