2 -- Studies on shapes

We investigated the effect of movement by arranging positions of shapes. However, various kind of shapes which have movement are also found when we investigate the shapes themselves.

(1) Wave forms

Let's think about waves on a beach which are coming and going back and on shapes the water of a mountain stream which is moving making sounds. The shapes of the moving water surface of the sea and a river continue to attract us.

We feel movement in the shapes of waves from our usual experiences. Many artists have drawn art with a rich feeling of movement utilizing this human nature. Among them, B. Riley left many works with visual illusions focusing on the significant optical effect by the assembly of wave forms. When we stand in front of her great work named "Big Water Fall", we feel as if the surface were moving. The movement in this case is impressive because it is based on vivid experiences of the actual "movement" of water.

Syu Gotoh is a unique artist who has composed many works with wave lines using a wave form sculpture making machine (Gilosh Machine).
