3 -- Studies on colors We feel a rhythm of colors when similar colors are used here and there on a surface in works of plane KOHSEI (Basic Art & Design) and painting. Rhythm is a kind of a feeling of movement described in the next section. Moreover, the expression of movement can even be realized by a skillful use of advancing and recessing colors as previously stated. In this way, the movement can be expressed by colors, and the easiest way of using colors is probably gradation. Gradations of either a hue, brightness, and a chroma are acceptable. The eyes are led along the direction where a color gradually changes. In other words, movement is created on the sight. The work in Figure 478 below is creating a rich movement
on the whole surface using gradation of colors most effectively.
