(4) Ideas for using paper

Paper is probably the first inevitable material used for plane KOHSEI (Basic Art & Design). Though the general method is to draw with ink and paints on the paper and to finish it. Expression can be done even without using paper. The embossing described in the previous section is an example, but other methods will be discussed.

(i) Rubbing and twisting

Since paper has a weakness with water, wet paper will be twisted after rubbing. It will be wrinkled by rubbing hard. Paper strings formed by twisting Japanese paper have long been used. "Mizuhiki", used for ceremonial occasions, is made as follows. Paper string is painted with Chinese white and water glue to solidify, and beauty and hardness are given to it as a string material.

Development of modelings using "Mizuhiki" is unique in Japan.
