First Serbian Insurrection - 1804-1813
An immediate cause for insurrection was so-called "slaughter of
princes", marking a climax of lawlessness in Serbia (Belgrade
eyalet). The elected leader of insurrection Đorđe Petrović
Karađorđe
did not attack the Turks directly before the battle of Ivankovac
(1805). Prior to that the insurrectors were fighting for
establishment of law and order. Along with a number of victories
against the Turks (Ivankovac, Mišar, Deligrad, Štubik...) the
insurrectors began to establish the organization of power, i.e., the
renovation of Serbian government. Apart from National Assembly, the
Council (Sovjet) was organized as an executive instrument with
Ministries (
popečiteljstvo
). The work on improvement of people's
education has also been undertaken.
