(3) Application to art and design

Importance is attached to the textures all the more in recent paintings. Creating textures is often regarded as producing art works. In the painting of Ken Kawakane shown Figure 656, a unique texture is used formed in such a way that paints were pushed out behind the cloth with rough meshes. Texture is also important even in the world of design. Texture is even much more strongly felt in the illustration of the fairy tale on front page in Figure 655. This is because the texture of the picture drawn on the paper with a rough surface is amplified further by the printing. In other words, a smaller illustration is drawn on mermaid ripple paper with fine unevenness, and is extended using a printing camera for printing. The roughness of the background surface is all the more emphasized.
