Mies van der Rohe's architecture adds cubes or their longitudinal distortions (tetragonal crystal system). As the only prism among the Platonic solids, the cube enjoys the advantages of usability thanks to its horizontal "useful areas" and vertical "spatial divisions", but disadvantages in stability due to missing triangulation.

For the first time, Mies van der Rohe arranged whole groups of different buildings onto a square grid, such as the Campus of the IIT (Illinois Institute of Technology).
