Slavik Jablan

An L-system is an automaton designed by Aristid Lindenmayer in 1968 to model cell development. Cells are represented by symbols and cell subdivision is modeled by replacing these symbols with strings of symbols. Here is an example of the Koch-curve system derived from a single square.

The basic L-systems for all illustrations are taken from FRACTINT program, and then used to create L-art (or the art of L-systems). More about L-systems you could find in References following this L-art exhibition.

The main property of the L-systems used here is antisymmetry - the equivalence between "figure" and "ground". That kind of antisymmetry occurs in ornamental art from prehistory till nowdays. More about that you may find in my paper Modularity in Art.
