History of Belgrade

Belgrade is the capital and largest city of Serbia. It is located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. It was founded by Celts in the 3rd century BC under the name Singidunum. The Slavic name "Beligrad" (White city) was first recorded in 878. It became capital of the medieval Serbian state for the first time in 1405. During its long and tumultuous history, Belgrade has been conquered by 40 armies, and 38 times it has risen from the ashes. Besides its rich heritage, Belgrade is also known for its urban character and vibrant nightlife, which makes the authentic atmosphere and spirit of this city.

Traveling options

Belgrade airport is well connected with most larger airports, as well as couple of smaller ones with low cost companies. If you need assistance in booking your flight, you can order it through Impala as well. If you come with your own on car make sure to organize a parking spot since the city centre is quite restricted zone for parking in the streets (max 1-3 hours). There are several public garages (like Obilićev venac or Zeleni Venac) and the daily ticket is 1500 RSD. It is NOT recommended to arrive in Belgrade by train.

Taxi takes about 20 minutes to the city center. For the use of taxi services from Belgrade Airport Nikola Tesla to your accommodation, contact the city service TAXI INFO desk, located in the baggage reclaims or arrival area. You can issue certificate of fixed price there, which is a way to avoid illegal taxies that could overcharge your ride. Price: Eur 30

Places to visit

Kalemegdan fortress is one of the most important representatives of Belgrade's cultural heritage. It is located above the confluence of the Sava and Danube River and Great War Island and provides one of the most beautiful views of Europe. With its Upper and Lower Town, as well as Kalemegdan Park, it is the first-class outdoor museum. The JETC 2025 guided tour of the fortress will be organized for the conference participants on the first day of the event.

You might also like to visit locations in the downtown area of Belgrade, such as Nikola Tesla museum, which preserves the heritage of the greatest Serbian scientist and inventor Nikola Tesla, the Church of Saint Sava, which is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world, or a historic street Skadarlija, which is is considered the main bohemian quarter of Belgrade from the early 19th century.
