QUANTUM COMPUTING IN COMPUTATIONAL MECHANICS – A MIRAGE OR THE FUTURE?
Over the past four decades an ever increasing attention has been directed towards envisioning and engineering quantum computers. Although still in its beginnings, quantum computing already shows high potential for many applications which could lead to significant improvements and yet another technological breakthrough. In this lecture we will present an overview of possible ways in which quantum computers (QCs) could be used in computational mechanics to solve large and computationally intensive problems, and to do so exponentially faster than the classical computers. We will present basic theoretical concepts and underlying operational principles of quantum computers, and then refer to several examples of their use in solving mechanical problems such as multiscale homogenization and data-driven modeling and optimization and plane elasticity problems. We will also compare the efficiency of the solution using quantum computers and the classical ones, by referring to the complexity analysis and computation time. Finally, some drawbacks, practical limitations and potential problems inherent to quantum computers will be pointed out, therefore completing the picture of basic ideas and concepts of QCs and answering the question of their feasibility and possible applications in engineering mechanics in the near future.
