GALOIS THEORY, LATTICE POLYTOPES AND ENUMERATIVE GEOMETRY
I will present a relatively new field of study at the crossroads of three classical topics:

  • Enumerative geometry: e.g. how many lines in the space intersect each of the given four lines?
  • Lattice polytopes (e.g. polygons with vertices at the nodes of checkered paper): how to find all the lattice polygons of area 2?
  • Galois theory: can we express by radicals the coordinates of the intersection points of two conic curves in the plane? What about three quadric surfaces in space?
We shall discuss many similar questions, both resolved and open ones, and see how they are related. No knowledge of these topics is assumed, besides the notions of polytope, permutation group and the fundamental theorem of algebra.
