This seminar was initiated by prof. dr Stojan Bogdanović in 1982 under the title "The Seminar for semigroup theory and functional equations". In the period 1990-96 the name was "The seminar for semigroup theory". From 1996 it has been called "The Seminar for Algebra". Currently there are eight members with Ph.D. degrees, three with M.Sc. degrees, three young assistants and a few undergraduate students. There are expository lectures on topics in contemporary algebra as well as reports of new results.

Quite frequently there are visits of experts from universities elsewhere in Serbia and abroad. The seminar is recognized internationally as the Niš school of semigroup theory.
