DETERMINATION OF THE SPATIO-TEMPORAL PATTERNS OF DROUGHT
During this century the risks associated with climate change have been increased rapidly. Also, the number of extreme dry periods has been increased. Drought as a hazard cannot be avoided, but we can prevent it from becoming a disaster. Because of that, determination of the spatio-temporal patterns of drought, as well as an adequate estimation of drought characteristics, is necessary for planning the efficient use of water resources, hydroelectric, and agricultural production. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and S-mode principal component analysis (PCA) were used to capture the drought patterns. Agglomerative hierarchical cluster analysis was applied to identify three different drought sub-regions in Serbia.

APPLICATION OF COMPOSITE INDICATORS FOR DECISION SUPPORT IN THE FIELD OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
Composite indicators are an effective decision- support tool in the field of environmental protection, due to their mutual comparability, ranking possibilities, and statistical significance. The application of composite indicators in environmental protection relies on aggregated index, which contain several indicators statistically focused on specific areas, and the weighting coefficients assigned to them. In order to avoid possible shortcomings of composite indicators, the objectivity of weighting methods and systems should be taken into account, as well as its stability. Ranking of composite indicators is organized by methods of multi-criteria or multivariate analysis, and modelling by using appropriate software packages, e.g. Smart PLS. Smart PLS software using partial least squares method supports modelling of structural equations based on variance, and also calculates standard criteria for evaluation of results, statistical analysis, as well as a graphical interpretation of results. Further research should be focused on the application of composite indicators for making decisions in cities, ie for deciding on the local effect of environmental protection in utilities.
