FRACTIONAL DAMPING MODELS, DEEP LEARNING AND DECISION-MAKING IN MECHANICS OF METAMATERIALS: A REVIEW OF RECENT CONTRIBUTIONS AND FUTURE OUTLOOKS
Fractional calculus has been applied successfully for modeling of many different phenomena in physics, materials science, and other scientific fields. Application of fractional calculus in linear viscoelasticity mostly relies on fractional-order derivative constitutive equations. Such models are applied in structural mechanics to describe stress relaxation/retardation phenomenon or vibration damping. Some earlier work on fractionally damped nonlocal elastic models of nanostructures will be mentioned. Recently introduced models of fractionally damped phononic crystals and acoustic metamaterials with corresponding dispersion properties will be also presented. Such periodic structures are widely used in many practical applications for vibration attenuation, blast-wave mitigation, waveguides or sound isolation due to the existence of stop bands within which the elastic/acoustic waves cannot propagate freely. This requires a specific optimal design of metamaterial unit-cells in order to achieve desired band gaps. Making a decision for the optimal metamaterial design in some cases needs multi-objective optimization tools. This can be observed as an optimal design process of the microstructure of materials with respect to desired mesoscale properties and functionalities. Such a process requires an intelligent agent that learns from a dataset and makes optimal decisions, where the application of contemporary deep learning methods shown to be very useful.
