MECHANICS THROUGH THE WORLD OF MUSIC AND ARTS
The lecture is dedicated to the memory of Fern Rašković (1946-2016), a uniquely talented violinist-student of the famous David Ohstrah (1908-1974). (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYRMX7VKdD4). She is also a Professor at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade, and the favorite daughter of Professor Dr. Ing. and Mathematician Danilo P. Rašković (1910-1985), who for one period was also the head of the MI SANU Mechanics Department, and from whom the lecturer learned Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. The content of the first part of the lecture will be focused on the oscillations of deformable bodies (strings and beams, as well as membranes) and their mathematical description by partial differential equations and accompanying boundary and initial conditions, in natural and forced oscillations. Then the connection with the oscillations of musical instruments will be pointed out: chordophone-string instruments (violin, piano, harp, guitar); Membranophonic (tympanum, drum and drum); idiophones (xylophone, castanets, quimole, triangles); aerophones (oscillations of air in the pipe and body: organ, trumpet, flute, clarinet, folk flute, whistling); electrophones (electrical oscillations are converted into acoustic signals, and then emitted). Oscillations of deformable bodies create waves of certain amplitudes and a set of frequencies, which, in the domain of audibility, turn into music. There will also be words about what is in all this a mathematical formulation of the description of single-frequency and multi-frequency elongations of the resulting oscillations with the appropriate set of frequencies, and when it is beautiful music, and a chaotic combination of linear and non-linear modes and energy transfer from mode to another mode! The content of the second part of the lecture is based on the lecturer's memories of concerts, operas, vaudevilles and ballets, which she saw and heard in the accompanying socio-cultural events of international scientific gatherings in mechanics.
