BEYOND LOGIN: ENHANCING SECURITY WITH CONTINUOUS AUTHENTICATION
Classical one-time authentication (OTA) verifies a user’s identity when they first access a system. However, this raises an important question: what happens after initial authentication? How can the system determine whether the same legitimate user continues to use the session, or whether the session has been taken over by an intruder? Continuous authentication (CA) addresses this question by continuously, or sufficiently frequently, reassessing evidence about the current user throughout a session. This presentation traces the development of continuous authentication, with particular emphasis on behavioral biometrics, which provide a natural and widely studied means of supporting (continuous) authentication by analyzing patterns in the way users interact with devices. CA is presented not as a replacement for OTA methods, but as a complementary approach that enhances security by extending identity verification beyond the initial login.
