ON THE SECURITY OF A BLOCKCHAIN-ASSISTED AUTHENTICATION PROTOCOL FOR WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS (WSNS)
Authentication, the process of verifying the identity of users, devices and systems, is a fundamental building block of modern digital society. It is implemented in virtually every software system, from simple applications to complex critical infrastructure. A vast number of authentication protocols have been proposed for different domains and environments, each shaped by specific requirements and resource constraints. Although initially verified as secure by their original authors, subsequent independent analysis frequently uncovers flaws in the correctness and security of these designs, motivating further improvements. In this presentation, we conduct a security analysis of a recent, lightweight blockchain-assisted authentication protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). While the protocol claims to provide mutual authentication and resistance against a range of attacks, we demonstrate a critical vulnerability that undermines its security claims. Furthermore, we discuss several inefficiencies and underlying design issues. Our findings underscore the importance of thorough, independent security evaluations for authentication protocols, especially when integrating novel technologies such blockchain, as they can unintentionally introduce new vulnerabilities into a system despite their promising features.
