DFI Handy Scanner HS-3000

DFI Handy Scanner HS-3000, developed by DFI (Diamond Flower Inc.), was first publicly mentioned in 1988, which is considered the beginning of its production and distribution. This handheld optical scanner was designed to meet the growing demand for digitizing printed documents and images during the rapid rise of personal computers in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Unlike the larger and more expensive desktop scanners of that era, the HS-3000 was compact, portable, and affordable, making it particularly suitable for use in small offices, educational institutions, and even home environments. The device allowed users to process scanned text using optical character recognition (OCR) software, as well as to digitize images for archiving, transmission, or editing purposes. Technical Specifications:

  • Device type: Handheld optical scanner
  • Connectivity: RS-232 (serial port)
  • Compatibility: IBM PC and DOS systems
  • Power supply: Via serial port or external adapter
  • Software: DFI Scan Utility / Image Tool (5.25" floppy disks)
The DFI HS-3000 served as an important solution for widespread document scanning in settings where compact and accessible tools were needed. Its portability and ease of use enabled many users to adopt digital archiving and electronic document management well before the mainstream availability of multifunctional scanners and mobile scanning devices. As one of the early tools in the field of digital data management, the HS-3000 contributed to the development of modern archival practices and tools for organizing, searching, and preserving digital content.
