Cultural heritage digitisation projects

Cultural monuments of Novi Pazar

The digital presentation of the cultural heritage of Novi Pazar is the result of the activities aimed at preserving and presenting digitised content, as well as enabling its accessibility by creating a multilingual digital guide. Digitisation of certain cultural monuments and sites, among others, Stari Ras with Sopoćani, Novi Pazar Fortress with hammam, Stara čaršija, Altum-alem mosque and Jewish cemetery, nurtures the multiculturalism of this area and provides guidelines for understanding and inclusion of minority cultural groups. This presentation enables the general public to access the cultural heritage of Novi Pazar with the aim of preserving, promoting and presenting its cultural heritage.

Digitisation of the journal Film Volumes (1968-1986)

The digitisation of the journal Film Volumes is the first endeavour of the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in the field of digital humanities with the aim of preserving important segments of film theory in Serbia. The project was created in synergy between the Faculty of Dramatic Arts and the Mathematical Institute of SANU. The content of Film Volumes (1968-1986) consists of 84 issues that provide detailed account of the main development paths conceptions within film theory in the world, with a special reference to domestic film and theoretical creativity. The importance of this project is manifold, to mention just a couple. It can be useful as a repository of information, but it is also a means of showing growing awareness of its importance as a work of intellectual, theoretical, and cultural heritage.

Serbia-Forum

Serbia-Forum is a platform developed by the Mathematical Institute of SANU for the presentation, documentation, and cataloging of cultural heritage. The portal is used by several national cultural institutions. For example, the National Library of Serbia uses the platform for the Digital National Library of Serbia, which includes books, old manuscripts, periodicals, cartographic material, etc. The Museum of Yugoslavia uses it for several of its photo collections, while the Archives of Yugoslavia uses it for photo documentation of the national news agency Tanjug.

"Documents on the foreign policy of the Kingdom of Serbia: 1903-1914" – digitisation and Internet presentation

The project "Documents on the foreign policy of the Kingdom of Serbia: 1903-1914" – digitisation and Internet presentation was realised in cooperation with the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Mathematical Institute of SANU, and with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Information. It is a digital presentation of the edition of the same name, created over a period of over three decades. The material collected was critically processed by our renowned historians and archival experts. The edition mostly refers to the diplomatic correspondence of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Serbia in the period between the May Coup and the outbreak of the First World War. Altogether, it contains seven books, with 25 volumes and 42 tomes, and about 31,000 pages. The process of digitisation gives this source the first-class importance for understanding the international position and socio-political circumstances in Serbia more visible and accessible to both the scientific and the general public.

Digitisation of the historical place Bač with its surroundings

During 2018, the Mathematical Institute of SANU realised a project focusing on the digitisation of the cultural landscape of Bač, which includes parts of the municipalities of Bač, Bačka Palanka and Odžaci. This area, apart from being a landscape of exceptional natural potentials, is a place of coexistence and centuries-old intertwining of different ethnic and religious communities. The monuments which are included in the project are of exceptional importance for the Republic of Serbia and the outstanding testimony to such circumstances. We will mention the medieval fortress of Bač with a recognisable turret, the tower gate "Šiljak", the remains of the Turkish bath – hammam, the Franciscan monastery in Bač and the Orthodox monastery Bodjani.

Digitisation of the cultural heritage of the Rudnik and Takovo region

The project, created in 2020, in cooperation with the Museum of the Rudnik and Takovo Region in Gornji Milanovac and the Mathematical Institute of SANU, focuses on digitising the heritage of the Rudnik and Takovo Region, which plays an important role in understanding the cultural and historical profile of modern Serbia. The project comprises activities such as creating video contents by using a drone and a 360-camera, photographing outstanding objects of immovable and movable heritage (Prince Miloš's residence in Gornja Crnuća, a famous place "Takovski grm", the Museum of the Second Serbian Uprising, etc.), creating a repository of digitised material with appropriate metadata, and developing an electronic bilingual guide for mobile devices. In this way, the largest part of the collection of the Museum of the Rudnik and Takovo region was largely modernised and made available.
