The Inspirational Chats – Portraits of Female Scientists in Mechanics
May Month of Mathematics – M3, 2021

The idea for the event came from Dr Ivana Atanasovska, Full Research Professor at the Mathematical Institute SANU.

The moderator of the event was Ms Biljana Nedeljkov, Expert Advisor at the Mathematical Institute SANU and a member of LeTSGEPs H2020 project on Gender Equality in Research Working Group.

Marking the International Women's Day in Mathematics, and as part of the 10th anniversary of “May Month of Mathematics – M3”, the national science promotion event organised by MISANU, two presentations were held as part of the program "Portraits of Female Scientists in Mechanics".

Event recordings are available at the following links: link and link.

During these two events, in an informal atmosphere, we talked about the life, work, and personality of four Serbian prominent female scientists - Professor Emeritus Vera Nikolic Stanojević, Professor Katica (Stevanović) Hedrih, Professor Livija Cvetićanin, and Dr Milena Radnović. The discussion was led by their close associates, reputable scientists, and professors as well:

Professor Emeritus Vera Nikolić Stanojević, (the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Kragujevac and the State University of Novi Pazar) was presented by:

  • Dr Ivana Atanasovska, Full Research Professor at the Mathematical Institute of SANU
  • Professor Emeritus Ćemal Dolićanin, First Rector at the State University in Novi Pazar
  • Professor Dobrica Milovanović, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Kragujevac
  • Dr Dragan Milosavljević, Professor the Faculty of Engineering, University of Kragujevac

Professor Katica (Stevanović) Hedrih (the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Niš and the Mathematical Institute SANU) was presented by:

  • Dr Mirjana Filipović, Full Research Professor, Mihailo Pupin Institute
  • Professor Jasna Fempl Madžarević
  • Dr Julijana Simonović, Assistant Professor the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Niš
  • Dr Dragan Milosavljević, Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Kragujevac

Dr Livija Cvetićanin, our reputable professor of Mechanics from the Faculty of Technical Sciences, University of Novi Sad was presented by:
  • Dr Ivana Kovačić, Professor the Faculty of Technical Sciences, University of Novi Sad
  • Dr Uranija Kozmidis Luburić, Professor at the Faculty of Technical Sciences, University of Novi Sad

Dr Milena Radnović, Full Research Professor at the Mathematical Institute SANU was presented by:
  • Dr Božidar Jovanović, Full Research Professor at the Mathematical Institute SANU
  • Dr Borislav Gajić, Associate Research Professor at the Mathematical Institute SANU

As the conclusions of these events, the strong messages to all young women was sent, with a call to engage in science.

Due to the large number of positive reactions and comments from the audience, it is planned for this event and topic to be repeated soon. We will also introduce other Serbian female scientists in the field of mathematics and mathematics-related sciences, considering that this kind of awareness raising to be one of the best ways to bring beauty of science closer to the people, and especially youth, but also to promote female researchers and encourage next generation of women scientists.
