Cooperation with the Department of Mathematics and Informatics of the Faculty of Science and Mathematics of the University of Novi Sad

The cooperation between the Mathematical Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MISANU) and the Department of Mathematics and Informatics (DMI) began back in 1954. At that time, young mathematicians Bogoljub Stanković, and a year later Mileva Prvanović, moved to the newly established Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad. Together with Mirko Stojaković, who had come from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Belgrade, they were the founders of the Mathematics Department. The Institute of Mathematics became part of the newly established Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Novi Sad in 1963.

Until the mid-1990s, almost all mathematicians from the Institute in Novi Sad had taken part in the projects organised by the Mathematical Institute SANU. MISANU coordinated the activities of the library, seminars and scientific research.

After the renewal of scientific projects in Serbia, at the beginning of the 2000s, the projects were smaller, so the cooperation was carried out on individual projects. We will mention the two latest projects that lasted until the end of 2019 (before the Science Fund became the coordinator of project activities in Serbia). These projects are: "Development of new information and communication technologies, based on advanced mathematical methods, with applications in medicine, telecommunications, power systems, protection of national heritage and education" (led by Zoran Ognjanović, MISANU) and "Methods of functional and harmonic analysis and partial differential equations with singularities "(led by Stevan Pilipović, DMI). These two projects summoned a huge number of researchers from different institution. During their activities on the projects, the researchers exchanged their ideas and results during regular visits to each other’s organisations.

A few years ago, on the initiative of these two institutions (and with the participation of other mathematical departments from Niš, Kragujevac, and Novi Pazar), the PhD School in Mathematics and the Serbian Scientific Mathematical Society (SNMD) were founded. The school is viewed as a chance for young mathematicians to gain experience in areas not covered by their basic institutions. The participation of researchers from MISANU is very important because the institutes themselves are outside the educational system, but in this way, they can equally participate in the important scientific activity. SNMD, led by MISANU, is still in the early phase of its development. The idea is to gather mathematicians from Serbia to cooperate in a better and more efficient way.

Finally, let us mention a couple of recent conferences jointly organised by MISANU and DMI: "Topics in Fractional Calculus and Time-Frequency Analysis", June 16-17, 2020 and "First Congress of Young Mathematicians" October 3-5, 2019, Novi Sad.
