Computer Science and Applied Mathematics Seminar
Chairpersons: Professor Vera Kovačević Vujčić, Professor Milan Dražić
The Applied Mathematics Seminar was founded in 1973, among the first seminars of the Mathematical Institute. In 2012, its name was changed to the Computer Science and Applied Mathematics Seminar. From the very beginning, one of the main goals of the Seminar was to encourage interaction between mathematics and other sciences, bringing together mathematicians and scientists, as well as practitioners from other disciplines. The interaction between researchers from scientific institutions and industry has also been strongly supported. Following the growing interest in computer science, in recent years, almost half of the lectures have been in the field of computing and its connections with mathematics. Another important goal of the Seminar is to promote young researchers through presentation of their doctoral theses.

The Seminar meetings are devoted both to presenting new scientific results as well as to describing real-life problems that require knowledge of mathematics and computing. Various topics have been covered, including numerical analysis and its applications, mathematical programming and the calculus of variations, operations research and management science, system theory, graph theory and applications, astronomy and geophysics, probability and statistics, fuzzy sets and logic, decision support systems, meta-heuristics, neural networks, artificial intelligence, algorithms and complexity, data mining, data structures, database management, computer security and cryptography, computer communication networks, computer graphics, pattern recognition, software engineering, digitalisation, e-business, e-learning, mathematical software, etc. Presentations of books and mathematical software are organised at the Seminar. In November 2017, the Seminar marked 20 years of the first paper on variable neighbourhood search: N. Mladenović, P. Hansen, Variable neighbourhood search, Computers & OR, 24(11) (1997), which holds the 52nd place in the list of 200 most cited papers in operations research and management science, and whose co-author Professor Nenad Mladenović is an active participant of the Seminar. In October 2020, one Seminar meeting was devoted to a special issue of the journal Discussiones Mathematicae Graph Theory, 40(2)(2020), which is devoted to late Professor Slobodan Simić, who also actively participated in the activities of the Seminar. The guests of the Seminar have been many world-known experts in the field of applied mathematics and computer science. Among the visitors’ contributions, we wish to acknowledge those by Jack Edmonds, Panos Pardalos, Willem Haemons, Alain Hertz, Zoran Obradovic, Anton Eremeev, Alexander Strekalovskiy, Ismael Yero, Yury Kochetov, and many others.

The Computer Science and Applied Mathematics Seminar meets regularly once a week from October to May. The meetings are organised on Tuesdays at 2 pm. The lectures are broadcast live and recorded for the archive of the Seminar. All lectures can be found at link.

Since 1995, some lectures of the Seminar have been organised jointly with the Faculty of Organisational Sciences. The IEEE Chapter on Computer Science (CO-16) Belgrade, Republic of Serbia, has been supporting the organisation of the Seminar since 2008.
